merchants in all matters of development. China can-

-not be expected to compete with other nations until she has put her house in order.

You and we being people of the same continent and of the same race, there is no reason why we should

not help each other. We have been able to replace

certain things, for which we entirely depended on

Europe before the war. What we want to know is whether your people will readily accept our manu-

-factures, should they be made, if not equal in quality, nearly as good as those which used to

come from Europe.

That we cannot tell as we are not in close touch

We are all business men and scarcely mix up with that class of people; but we will not fail to let them know. It is silly of them to stir up ill

At the present juncture, very little hope cɛn be held out as to stimulating Chinese efforts in carrying out general improvements. Being of the same race as you, they may be reasonably expected

to throw in their lot with you in any movement

directed towards the welfare of the two peoples,

but before any good can be attained, the two peoples must first be taught to respect and sympathise with each other.
